Artsweek 2008: September 26th to October 5th

Artsweek is currently seeking proposals from Peterborough area individual artists, organizations and/or collectives. Artsweek projects are geared towards enticing audiences, introducing audiences to local artists and their work and, fostering the exploration of new ideas in creation. Artists are encouraged to develop collaborative projects. We invite creators from Peterborough at any stage of their career able to demonstrate prior artistic endeavors and that have a clear artistic vision. This includes groups and artists from diverse communities. Please read each project/event category carefully.

*Availability: If you are a performer or performing arts group please note the dates and ensure you are available during this 10-day period. If you are not available during this ten-day period please state these dates when you submit your proposal.

Artsweek's Mission:

1. To support and promote arts and cultural programming in Peterborough and the surrounding region.

2. To increase the visibility & vital role of the arts sector within the City of Peterborough by coordinating an annual showcase of local arts production including visual, performing and new media arts.

3. To support artists and arts groups working in a wide variety of artistic disciplines in the creation & production of new works and, to promote collaborative, large-scale public art projects that would not be possible otherwise.

4. To create opportunities for arts, culture and business sectors to work together by inviting businesses, community arts organizations, arts service organizations, arts’ centers, public and private galleries to produce projects and programs with Artsweek in mind.

5. To advance, foster and promote appreciation and understanding of arts and culture by promoting local arts production, resources and educational opportunities.

6. To support local producers and organizations whose mandate is open and inclusive.

Note: Projects & fees may be revised based on changes to the Artsweek budget (pending funding).

Artsweek Project/Special Event Descriptions 2008: Please review this information carefully, unless otherwise specified please complete the entire proposal/application form. Artsweek will negotiate venues on behalf of the artists, however, if you have a space secured please indicate this in your proposal.

1. BLINK: Visual and new media projects in downtown locations that will be on display for the duration of Artsweek; including, but not limited to storefront window spaces, open public spaces such as parks are not eligible. Locations should be within walking distance of the downtown core (approximately between Aylmer and Water & Charlotte and Hunter streets). Artists proposing installation work should consider the actual location of the project, the passer-by traffic, the function of the piece at different times of day and night, and the security of the work. All mediums will be considered. Preference will be for works that connect local businesses with local artists and art events. Please submit a completed proposal form, pages one to three, with attachments and support materials as specified.

2. Performing Arts Series: Artsweek is seeking proposals from individual artists, organizations and/or collectives working in one or more, contemporary live and inter-disciplinary, performative formats (including theatre & dance). Works that are able to accommodate limited audiences need to anticipate the number of performances required to accommodate this limitation. Please submit a completed proposal form, pages one to three, with attachments and support materials as specified.

3. Film/Video Screenings & Installations: Artsweek is seeking proposals to screen local, original, film and video works in two or more locations. Video installation works will also be considered. Please submit a completed proposal form, pages one to three, with attachments and support materials as specified.

4. The New Reading Series: This is a series of four public presentations in venues and alternative spaces that serve to promote local writers and storytellers working in various formats including spoken word, rap and Indigenous storytelling. Each location will feature the work of a single artist. Writers for the reading series need only submit the first page of the proposal/application and 3-4 pages of writing for review.

5. Music Series: This will be a series of small public presentations reflecting the diversity and range of local music production in and around Peterborough and the Kawartha's. Musicians may be asked to play at various publicly assessable outdoor locations during the week. There are three possible options for public presentations a) during the Hunter Street West Festival evening performances b) at “Doors Open Peterborough heritage locations (indoors and outdoors and, c) in public areas weekdays during lunch hours. Please submit a completed proposal form, pages one to three, with attachments and support materials as specified.

6. Battle of the Bands: For youth ages 14 through 25. In partnership with The Bridge Artsweek will hold an evening that features local musicians the Saturday, Sept. 22nd. Those involved have an opportunity to be voted the most popular band by the audience & play the Hunter St. Festival. If elected you will play during the Hunter Street Festival the following Saturday. Bands/musicians applying to this program please complete only the first page of the proposal/application form and send a list of accomplishments in the field & sample of your work (if available).

7. Artisans/Craft Vendors: A proposal is not necessary for vendors/arts and social organizations interested in participating in the vendor/information booth section of the Hunter Street West Festival. Please direct inquires and send the following information by email to focusfair@gmail.com. State your individual or organizations name (or names if working collectively), what you will sell/exhibit or what services you are promoting and contact information, phone # and address.

8. 20 Minute Word: Audience members contribute sentences that are put into a collection pot at the beginning of the evening. One sentence is pulled out and read aloud to the audience and to four to six special guest writers as the essential ingredient in their work. They are then given 20 Minutes to cook-up a literary delicacy that must use that sentence in its entirety.
