May 16 2008 - 7:00pm
May 16 2008 - 9:00pm

Please join the festivities from 7pm to 9pm at our new location! The PAU is now located at the rear unit of 378 Aylmer Street (just next door to our original location). All are welcome to stop by and enjoy some art and refreshments in our new space.

Our Grand Opening coincides with the opening reception of a new photography exhibition by local artists Corin Ford-Forrester and Martin Strunk, which runs until May 30.

Diverging from her academic background in science (B.Sc. University of Guelph '99), Corin Ford-Forrester studied traditional black and white photography at Sir Sanford Fleming College, the Haliburton School of the Arts, in 2006 where she achieved the highest standing in the Photo Arts program. Inspired by her love and respect for the natural world, her photography-based work explores the devastating impact of human beings on planet earth and the environmental legacy we will leave for our children. She has lead several photographic workshops with school children, has shown her work in a number of art festivals and galleries in Ontario and has also won a film festival award for her environmentally focused, short art film "Mother".

The beauty and fragility of our earth is mirrored in the exquisite strength and delicacy of the female forms that appear in her photographic images. Composite images are created from multiple negatives, juxtaposing the feminine against scenes of industrial development or blending the figure harmoniously into a natural scene. This personification of Mother Earth in human form connects the viewer emotionally with the violation of the environment that results from our actions as human beings.

Martin Strunk was born in Germany and grew up in downtown Toronto and rural Ontario before moving to Peterborough in 2001. His time in Peterborough has been spent earning a degree in Spanish and International Development at Trent while working as a cook and bartender. After completing his degree, Martin spent a year in Spain teaching English to kindergarten children. He currently works as a full time cook in Peterborough.

Strunk's photographs in this exhibition were taken in Spain, primarily in Madrid. They explore the relationship between society, architecture and the natural world. Strunk always been fascinated by the interplay between angle and light in the natural world and in constructed space, and his photographs are an exploration of this relationship which he has never found more dramatic than in Spain.
