Grand Opening at the Peterborough Arts Umbrella May 16! Please join the festivities from 7pm to 9pm at our new location. The PAU is now located at the rear unit of 378 Aylmer Street (just next door to our original location). All are welcome to stop by and enjoy some art and refreshments in our new space. Our Grand Opening coincides with the opening reception of a new photography exhibition by local artists Corin Ford-Forrester and Martin Strunk, which runs until May 30. The PAU Annual General Meeting: The PAU Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday, May 12, at 7 pm. The AGM is a chance for PAU members to elect new Board members, learn about the plans for the new year, and meet the many people who make the PAU work. Please join us in our new space on Monday, May 12.
Memberships: We are currently in the process of updating and revising our membership database. If you are interested in becoming a member at the PAU, or if your membership has lapsed, we would be happy to set up a membership for you. Call for Submissions:
June Members' Exhibition: All PAU members in good standing are eligible to submit up to three pieces of artwork for the Members' Exhibition opening June 6. Artwork must have been completed within the last year and ready to hang (if applicable). Please drop off your submissions and complete a submission form at the PAU on Friday May 30, Monday June 2 or Tuesday June 3 between 10am and 5pm. Artsweek 2008: Artsweek is currently seeking proposals from Peterborough area individual artists, organizations and/or collectives. Application forms can be downloaded from the PAU website (http://www.pauart.com/node/395), or by e-mailing ptboarts@gmail.com. Mail or deliver complete proposals by June 12, 2008 to the Peterborough Arts Umbrella, c/o "Artsweek Projects", 378 Aylmer Street North, Peterborough, Ontario, K9J 7X6. (Important to note: digital copies are not accepted due to the time/cost necessary for processing).
Peterborough Fallen Firefighters' Monument: The City of Peterborough and the Art Gallery of Peterborough, in conjunction with the Peterborough Fire Department, are extending a Call for Public Art Proposals relative to a major commission of a contemporary memorial dedicated to firefighters in Peterborough's history who have lost their lives in the line of duty or due to a work-related disease. Proposals are sought from professional artists, landscape architects, and urban designers throughout the province of Ontario. Applications are to be received no later than June 30, 2008. Art Rental Program at the Art Gallery of Peterborough: Attention all artists! The Art Gallery of Peterborough is accepting submissions for their Art Rental Program, which provides local artists with an opportunity to sell or rent out their work. Artists are invited to submit one original artwork to the AGP (250 Crescent St.) on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Works cannot exceed three feet in any one direction and must be in excellent condition, labeled, and ready to hang. Please bring the original work, a biographical statement and a digital image on CD at the time of submission. For more information, please call 743-9179.

PAUL Newsletter: All PAU members are invited to submit articles, event listings, photographs and illustrations to the PAUL newsletter. Please send your submissions to paul@pauart.com.

May 6 - Arzoo Dance Theatre with Peterborough New Dance presents Collision/Collusion: Kathak Meets Jazz, 7 pm at Market Hall, 336 George Street North. Collision/Collusion is a program of four dances featuring a groundbreaking collaboration between the classical Indian dance form kathak, and a jazz quintet led by Toronto composer/saxophonist Sundar Viswanathan which includes one of the world's hottest jazz guitarists, Rez Abbasi from New York City. Tickets are $15 or $10 for students, seniors or the underemployed, and are available at the door or in advance by reservation. Call (705) 745-1788.
May 9 - Opening reception at the Art Gallery of Peterborough (250 Crescent Street) at 7pm, featuring work by B.C. artist Kristi Malakoff in the main gallery. Admission is free and all are welcome.
May 11 - The Kawartha Youth Orchestra presents a concert and reception at 3 p.m. at Market Hall. Tickets are $10 and are available at Titles Bookstore in Peterborough and Happenstance Books and Yarns in Lakefield, or by calling (705) 740-9018.
May 15 - FireWire Channel presents: "Underpainting," the newest release from local director Rob Swales on Thursday, May 15 at the Gordon Best Theatre (216 Hunter Street West, above the Only Cafe). Screenings take place at 7pm and 9pm and are 68 minutes long. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door.
May 30 - Folk Under The Clock Season Finale: Strunz & Farah in concert (World Music Guitarists & Grammy Nominees). 8pm at Market Hall. Tickets available at Titles Bookstore, Moondance & Showplace Box office or on-line. Cost : $30 advance, $35 door, students $15 at door.
