A darkly funny emotional rollercoaster that careens through joy, laughter, anger and pain. Two women, one man and a social car wreck. That's how Mysterious Entity artistic director Em Glasspool describes Mysterious Entity's upcoming production. Glasspool's description is only partially tongue-in-cheek stating "It's a pretty brutal depiction of how a relationship can go wrong". "This is not a play for the faint of heart."
The Black Diamond relates the story of two women, Rhonda and Lynn, and their neighbour David. While their individual lives seem to be disconnected, their experiences weave together to create a coherant, if troubled whole. Glasspool said she was inspired to write The Black Diamond after participating in a script workshop with renowned Indigenous playwright, Tomson Highway, three years ago. As part of the development process, she took the script to Ojibwa language and culture consultant Dorothy Cameron (Taaji) and artistic consultant and performer Patti Shaughnessy of the O'Kaadenigan Wiingashk Collective for assistance with the indigenous elements of the story. Earlier this year, Glasspool and other members of Mysterious Entity had the chance to develop the script further under the guidance of visiting actor and dramaturge Ker Wells, a specialist in physical theatre.
