Grand Opening of the Peterborough Arts Umbrella's new location THIS FRIDAY!
Please join the festivities in our new space (378 Aylmer Street, rear unit) this Friday, May 16 from 7pm to 9pm! Admission is free and all are welcome. Our Grand Opening coincides with the opening reception of a new photography exhibition by local artists Corin Ford-Forrester and Martin Strunk, which runs until May 30. Artist in residence at the PAU: Shelley Niro
Peterborough Arts Umbrella is pleased to announce internationally recognized interdisciplinary artist Shelley Niro in residency May 19-23, 2008. Niro is currently a featured artist in residence at the Native American Indigenous Cinema and Arts, has studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts, is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, and received her MFA from the University of Western Ontario. She will be in Peterborough to work with a group of artists and filmmakers on the development and shooting of a scene from local emerging filmmaker Howard Adler's script, "Johnny Seven Fires." Niro will also be focusing on her own works with the use of the PAU's facilities and staff.
On Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Artspace (378 Aylmer Street) in Peterborough, Niro will present three of her video works including, Honey Moccasin, The Shirt, and Tree, starting at 8pm with a $5 cover or pay what you can. The discussion afterwards will include Niro and Nielsen and will explore decolonizing methodologies through art. For more information, please visit www.pauart.com.
Free workshops at the PAU:
In conjunction with Niro's residency, the PAU will be presenting two free video/audio workshops. On Thursday, May 15 from 6:30 to 7:30, Final Cut Pro 101 with Sarah DeCarlo will offer a beginner level introduction to the Final Cut Post-Production Software. On Thursday, May 29 from 6:30 to 7:30, Audio for Video with Ian Osborn will address basics of audio capture, useful microphone types, and microphone and boom techniques. Registration is limited. Call for submissions: Focus Fair
The next Focus Fair will be on June 21st as part of 400 Fest - a block party and street fest located on the 400 block of George Street between Hunter and Brock Streets. 400 Fest is a new event, shining a light on a vibrant part of Peterborough's downtown core - and the people and shops in the area. There is room for up to 30 vendors, the first twenty of which who register will be provided with tent space. The deadline to register for this Focus Fair event is June 1st, 2008 and the vending fee is $20 per individual. We can only guarantee you a spot once we've received your vendors fee. You must bring your own tables, chairs and display furniture and we'll provide bottled water. The Black Diamond: written, produced and directed by Em Glasspool, starring: Kate Story, Philip J. Oakley & Karyn Drane. Opens this Wedesday, May 14th and runs until Sunday, May 18th. Two women, one man and a social car wreck. That's how Mysterious Entity artistic director Em Glasspool describes the local theatre company's upcoming production.
