The Ode'min Giizis Strawberry Moon Festival June 19-22, 2008
O'Kaadenigan Wiingashk and Public Energy invite you to come experience a diversity of Indigenous artistic expression and events including gallery talks, film presentations and a music showcase at the Ode'min Giizis (Strawberry Moon) Festival. The Festival will celebrate this auspicious time of year and traditional Anishnaabe territory with a four-day multi-disciplinary arts festival in Peterborough, Ontario. Ode'min Giizis will feature local and visiting artists from the four directions who are unified by a strong self-determined aesthetic that honours traditional lands, culture and knowledge while also pushing boundaries in their own respective art forms. Events will take place at various venues, and will be co-presented by local arts organizations and businesses in a spirit of creativity, unity and the sweetness of the strawberry. June 23 – Grant Writing Basics with Kate Story. 7pm to 9pm at the PAU, 378 Aylmer St. A primer for artists interested in learning about arts funding, particularly arts council grants. This workshop seeks to demystify the grant-writing process and empower artists to seek funding for their work. Bring: A: (most importantly) yourself, B: (if applicable) a draft of a grant you are working on, and/or C: ideas you want to see funding for. Send ideas, drafts, questions, etc. to kstory@pipcom.com. July 5 - Beyond Autofocus: Intro Workshop for Digital Point-and-Shoot Cameras with Neil Muscott. 10 am to 5pm at the Silver Bean Cafe (Millenium Park). Your point-and-shoot camera can do more than you think. But most people never read their manual or learn to use all their camera’s features. This hands-on workshop will demystify the digital process, get you comfortable with your camera, and help you learn how to take better pictures. Workshop includes: learn how to use the features of your camera, understand shutter speed, exposure and ISO numbers, master the basics of light, view point and composition, techniques for better photos of people, places, nature and events and tips on saving/editing your photos for email, web and print. July 7 - Professional Practice for Visual Artists with April Steele. 7pm to 9pm at the PAU, 378 Aylmer Street. This course is an introduction to the business fundamentals of the art world for emerging visual artists. Topics covered will include preparing your portfolio, writing artists' statements and biographies, creating successful proposals and applications, approaching galleries, exhibiting, making connections and building your career. Presenting a professional image is an important element of an artist's work, and these tools will assist anyone beginning a career in the visual arts. Please feel free to bring your portfolio, artist's statement, draft applications or any other material you wish to discuss. April Steele is a practicing visual artist, curator and art instructor.
